Best Buys Of The Season

For Easter, in addition to great buys on hams & turkeys, seafood has become a great buy! Our increased demand for healthier foods has increased dramatically for fresh seafood; go into any supermarket today and you will find a huge selection fromaround the world. Increased demand has brought greater variety, lower prices & even better quality. With all this abundance, don’t be afraid to try a new fish or recipe!

Seafood not only tastes good but is good for you! Even the fattier fishes are good for you, so what are you waiting for?

The first signs of spring are fresh asparagus and fresh asparagus is coming from Peru and soon from our own local fields; they and the California strawberries are always welcome. Is it any wonder they are treats on the Easter table?
Spring comes earlier in Mexico and the first of the early mangoes start appearing on our store shelves. Mangos and papayas bring in the spring in Mexico. These sweet fruits offer nutrients such as beta-carotene and vitamin C, and also help digestion. When ripe, serve for dessert with sugar and yogurt or scoop out the papaya to make a unique salad bowl.

Though the ground is still snow covered and we are still getting icy blasts, down under in Chile, it’s the fall and with fall comes an abundance of grapes! Kids (& parents) love seedless grapes whether the traditional green Thompsons or the red Flames. Seeded Red & crimson globes are fast regaining popularity for the bursts of flavours they offer. This abundance will continue moving up towards until our own local grapes start in the late summer. Grapes, colourful, self contained and in a variety of flavours, and oh yes, good for you! Packed with vitamins & fibre, nature’s perfect portable snack!

Of course, with the cold weather, we still need a few good carbohydrates to fuel our bodies against the cold, lucky for us potatoes are abundant.

We need our veggies and this is the time of year the sweet onions are starting, they are mild enough to eat raw and make excellent side dishes on their own; at this time of year, they are the main event rather than an old reliable flavour enhancer. Try these recipes. Even for people who so not like onions, try the mild Mayas, Maui Sweets, Vidalias & Texas 1015s for flavour without the bite!

So enjoy the holidays and remember to set a place for those less fortunate.
