Foodie Smart Summer 2005 Newsletter

The summer is here for those of us in the northern hemisphere ; and with summer comes warm weather, sunny skies and local foods.

For those of us with green thumbs , the garden has begun rewarding us with fresh greens, herbs, fragrant strawberries, sweet peas and beans and soon home-grown tomatoes . For those of us without green thumbs; local Farmer markets begin to appear both in the cities and along rural back roads-And of course our local supermarkets are featuring summer offerings from around the world .

Eating healthy enjoying a variety of fruits and vegetables is never easier than in the summer months . Our bodies naturally tell us we do not need the heavy foods to protect us from cold weather anymore, so let’s listen to our bodies. When we were children, we ate when were hungry and we ate whatever we wanted; our bodies told us what we needed & when so let’s get in tune with our bodies once again.

The abundance of fresh foods and flavours at this time of year make it easy to enjoy life. It is hard to go wrong if you choose fresh ingredients & prepare them with a minimum fuss. This summer, spend less time in the kitchen and still eat healthier!

Most of us are more active in the summer; weather is nice, sun is out so outside we go. The season is too short to hide inside air conditioned buildings, but use common sense...

As in the winter, we need to be careful in the great outdoors. We need to take precautions against too much sun and heat illnesses. Mosquitoes find us appetizing so let’s make ourselves less tasty. Summer also means allergies to some, and this month we offer natural suggestions on how to deal with those pesky allergies.

So outside, and enjoy the summer while we can

What are your favourite foods?

Almost all local fruits & vegetables production will be peaking over the next few months. Check your local farmer outlets for your favourites. This is also the best time to preserve, freeze, can or dry your favourites for the rest of the year.

We can help: It is usually the ingredients, spices or cooking methods that set the cuisines apart. What was that dish that you had on you last holiday? Let us help you try to recreate it.

We can prepare these foods traditionally or we can experiment like the trendy chefs and create our own fusion dishes. Fusion dishes are merely ingredients prepared in unexpected ways or combinations. Choose your favourite flavours, select your ingredients & combine-what could be simpler?

Summer, the living is easy and cooking should be too.
